Advice for Presentations

Presenting and demo'ing are cornerstones of PodCamp and BarCamp style conferences - there's no keynote speakers, no elite hierarchy of who can and can't speak. Everyone's voice can be heard, in breakout sessions, lightning talks, etc. Here are some presenting tips:

  • Rehearse.
  • Bring your own gear. The Smart Classrooms at BHCC each have a podium with a Win32 box attached to it; each podium also has a VGA connector for laptops - Mac users, take note, you will need a DVI to VGA converter! For recording stuff, bring your own.
  • Bring a watch, clock, or other timekeeping device so that your session begins and ends as close to on time as possible, helping other presenters and attendees get their fair share of time as well. Clocks are present in the classrooms as well.
  • Plan for Murphy. Your presentation, no matter what it is, should be firmly in your mind so that if the projector breaks and your dog eats your show notes and your laptop blue screens, you can still give one heck of a presentation.
  • Know your stuff. Be ready for off the wall questions.
  • When booking sessions, if the slot you want is taken, book another time or space. There's a lot of presentation spaces, and we have two days for everyone to present!
